Establishing clear, respectful boundaries around communication, such as agreeing on no interrupting or yelling, further supports healthy interactions. - Listen Actively: Give your full attention when a family member is speaking. Put away distractions and mirror your family member’s body language, eye contact, pace and tone of voice, and be aware of creating a relaxed environment to create safety.
- Reflect Back: One of the most effective ways to reflect is through a technique called paraphrasing. This requires that you listen to the overall gist of your child’s experience and mirror back to them what you heard, using a few key phrases they’ve used. You can also use inferent reflection, where you might infer how they are thinking or feeling about the situation or event they’ve just described. For example, if your child describes a day at school packed with assignments and tests, you might say, “It sounds like you felt really overwhelmed during school today.” This shows that you are paying attention and care about their feelings.
- Avoid Dismissing Feelings: Even if you don’t fully understand or agree with their feelings, it’s important to acknowledge them. It is important to listen fully to your child’s perception of an event or issue and feelings surrounding it in order to support them in feeling understood, thereby feeling more regulated. What we tell parents most often is: “We are not trying to create another you, but rather supporting your child in becoming the best version of themselves–with all of their capabilities and limitations, their lived experience, and their ‘truths.’ Saying something as simple as, “I can see why you would feel that way” can go a long way in fostering connection.

It provides an essential pause in conversations, allowing time for reflection and giving each person the space they need to process their thoughts and emotions.
